I. Will. Learn. Spanish.
… if it kills me. I have been hunting all over the internet to find a method that will work. Almost every review that is posted is biased. I’ve tried Pimsleur and Rosetta Stone (both are stupid expensive). Here’s my two cents:
- Pimsleur Spanish I and II are great if all you want to learn is how to get by with simple (very formal) phrases. Quick warning to the guys in the house: “Nice to meet you” as taught by the Pimsleur Method (encantado) is considered mildly flirtatious and should NOT be used when introducing yourself to another man.
- Rosetta Stone (Level I) has taught me tons of vocabulary. You’ll be happy to know that I could easily wander the streets of Peru, pointing and saying “the boy is wearing a blue shirt” or “the women has bread” or “the doctors are dancing”.
Incidentally, I have actually learned quite a bit by downloading Plaza Sésamo from iTunes. I’m moving on to the Foreign Service Institute’s method and have hired a tutor. Wes is trying to teach me to roll my “rr’s”. I will get this. With God’s help, I will get this.

Ha ha, Brendan! I can just see you walking around saying things like the doctors are dancing! I have thought that no matter how much I tried to learn, that if I knew how to ask the proper questions in German or Spanish, I would most certainly not be able to understand the answer!!! Kevin would tell you that the way he really learned and became fluent in Spanish was to immerse himself, living with the people and simply not speaking English at all… not a simple matter when you are traveling back and forth!
You are young, though, and you CAN do this!!
Vicki
I’m getting there! Thanks for the encouragement…
